Muscle Relaxing Injections FAQs
It is a protein produced by a bacterium called Clostridium Botulinum and is administered by a professionally trained clinician as a non-surgical treatment to temporarily reduce frown lines, forehead lines, crow`s feet, lines around the mouth etc. During treatment, very small doses are injected into muscles, which causes them to relax and smoothes out the skin. The treatment usually takes about 10 to 15 minutes. As no recovery time is needed, you can literally have a treatment session in your lunchtime, if you wish, and return to work in the afternoon.
Repeated muscle use, eg. when you frown; pulls the skin into the same folds over and over again for many years. The creases in the folds form the lines on your face over time. By injecting into the relevant muscles, the nerve impulses in these muscles are altered, reducing their activity. The relaxation of these muscles allows the skin to also relax creating a smoother, more youthful look.
The improvement to the lines on your face is usually noticeable within several days to a week. The smoothing effect of the first treatment usually lasts for up to 3 to 4 months. Following subsequent treatments some areas may show a longer lasting effect. However it is worth bearing in mind, that results do vary from person to person and are also dependant upon the dose. Generally we prefer to be cautious, administer perhaps slightly less to new patients until we know what regime suits them, being prepared to top up the amounts during a follow up check if necessary.
Most people are pleased to find that muscle relaxing injections are uncomfortable rather than painful for a large majority of users. Any discomfort is usually minimal and brief. Before treatment is administered, we can use ice which numbs the area briefly. A surface anaesthetic cream may be used for more sensitive areas, but most people find this unnecessary. Generally the whole procedure takes no longer than 10-15 minutes.

Most side effects are short lived and linked to the injections, e.g. redness at the injection sites. Otherwise some other reported effects include a slight tiredness, mild headaches, temporary eyelid droop, nausea and cold and flu-like symptoms. In very rare instances, adverse reactions may include pain in the face and muscle weakness. These would occur within the first week post-treatment.
Immediately after the treatment there may be some redness and swelling at the injection site. This usually subsides after about half an hour. Sometimes there may be bruising, which can be covered with makeup to reduce the effect.
